History of Osijek

Osijek, the capital of Slavonia and the biggest town in Slavonia, is situated on the right bank of the river Drava, and two kilometres from its mouth in the Danube. The right bank of the river, which protects the area from floods, a safe crossing of the river Drava, and marshland represented a secure shelter in prehistoric times. On the area of today’s town there are several archaeological sites from different prehistoric periods and cultures from New Stone Age, to Copper Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.

Although the area was colonized already in prehistoric times, the first urban settlement was built by the Romans. Numerous archaeological discoveries, together with objects of scientific, historical, and artistic value are kept in town museum Muzej Slavonije, which was founded in 1877.
